10 Magic Everyday Foods That Can Get You High

Some apparently innocuous and surprisingly everyday ingredients can have strange side effects.

We all know that food, despite going straight into our viscera, can have a profound effect on our minds. Happiness, sadness, minor mental bloating–all can change at the drop of a fork, especially if you haven’t eaten in a while. Hallucination might be on a different order of mental alteration, but food can cause it just the same.

Here is a list of 10 everyday foods that can get you high.

10Coffee

Ac study found that subjects who drank cups of coffee a day were likely to hallucinate. This included hearing imaginary voices and sensing the presence of dead people.

09Cocoa

Chocolate contains anandamide, which is similar to the compounds released when cannabis is taken. A 130LB/59kg person would have to eat an estimated 25LB/11.3kg of chocolate to get high.

08Mulberries

Eating large amount of the unripe fruit can cause hallucinations. They also cause a stomach ache and have laxative properties.

07Stilton

A study by the British cheese board found that eating 0.7OZ/20g of stilton before bed caused bizarre dreams. Dreams included talking soft toys and dinner party guests being traded for camels.

06Chili Peppers

The chemical capsaicinoids found in hot react with your taste-buds. The body defends itself against the teat of hot chili by releasing endorphins, leaving you with a high.

05Mushrooms

Some species of mushroom contain the psychedelic drugs psilocybin and psilocin. They distort the perception of objects, while feeling and emotions intensity.

04Poopy seed Bagels

Poppy seeds contain enough opium alkaloids, morphine and codeine to cause you to fail a drug test. You´d have to eat an estimated 1.4OZ/40g of poppy seeds to achieve a medically relevant dose of morphine.

03Sarpa Salpa

Eating the head of this fish can cause days of auditory and visual hallucinations. The fish heads were eaten as a recreational drug during the Roman Empire.

02Rye Bread

Rye can become infected with the ergot fungus which contains the psychoactive chemical ergotamine. This is the cause of the medical condition ergotism, aka st. Anthonys fire, which causes hallucinations and convulsions,

01Nutmeg

Two tablespoons of the spice can cause an out of body sensation, due to the chemical myristicin. It also causes nausea, dizziness dry mouth and slow brain function for 2 days.
