UEFA League of Champions was started in 1955 as the European Champions Cup and at first it gathered champion clubs of European countries. The number of clubs and the competition system has changed, but the League of Champions is today the strongest and richest football competition in the world. Until season 1990/91 the competition was called the European Champions Cup (ECC), and since season 1991/92 it is played in groups and it changes its name to UEFA League of Champions.
League of Champions is a high profitable competition, especially for clubs that are placed in the final group phase. UEFA give a share of the money made from TV right sales to all the clubs that participated. In the season 2004/05 the amount of money shared with the clubs varied from 3.8 million Euros (FC Sparta, Prague) to 30,6 million Euros given to champion FC Liverpool. UEFA estimates that the clubs in season 2005/06 around 430 million Euros was given. Apart from this clubs also get a considerable share of money from sales of tickets, shirts and sponsorships.
