The Hunger Games is a romantic trilogy for young people written by American writer Suzanne Collins. First part came out in 2008, in which main heroine Katniss Everdeen was presented, who lives in post-apocalyptic world which is ruled by powerful Capitol. Under the name Hunger Games every year a reality show is organized, in which boys and girls fight one against the other.

Considering that there can be only one winner, participant of Hunger Games fight for their lives. Second part, Catching Fireje came out in 2009, and for 2010 there is planned the last part of Mocking jay. According to the words of an author, idea for this came in the moment was created when she was changing channels on the television between reality show and news from the battlefield. She wrote down that idea right away on piece of paper. Success was huge… Only in USA in first years it was sold in over 1.5 million copies, and license was assigned in 37 countries. Suzanne Collins is the world’s 3rd highest earning author, making 55 million dollars a year. Before “The Hunger Games” she wrote for kids TV, including “Clarissa explains it all”.

The story was based on the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. In the myth, Athens offered 7 boys and 7 girls to be devoured by the Minotaur.

The 1st film had a budget of 78 million, but Jennifer Lawrence was only paid 500K. To return for the sequel she was paid 10 million dollars.

Japan’s “Battle Royale” predates The Hunger Games by nine years and has a similar plot. Collins had never heard of it, but similarities meant a U.S. remake of “Battle Royale” was canceled.
