Although we live in a world where law rules, law and international conventions are respected, still we cannot determine with certainty the exact number of states.
Although there is a criterion for determining states and dependant territories, there is no political consistency about the number of the same, so it is difficult to answer how many countries in the world. These states even though they have their own organs and territory, are not recognized by the UN and officially they do not exist. State of Palestine officially recognized as a non-member observer state of the UN in 2013, despite US and Israeli opposition.

Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus recognized solely by turkey, it is seen as occupied territory after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974.
