10 RARE ASTRONOMICAL OCCURENCES

107. 10 RARE ASTRONOMICAL OCCURENCES
Astronomy is science that studies objects/occurrences outside Earth and its atmosphere. In such a vast space every moment thousands of astronomical occurrences happen so that we cannot record them all, nor can we explain them. And while some astronomical occurrences are often we will have a second chance at them, for the second chances regarding some other occurrences human kind will have to wait for 120 years.

One of biggest magic of nature and very rare occurrences is SUN eclipse. That is when in the middle of the day the SUN loses its light, and night forms so that the stars can be visible. Mystery of disappearance of the Sun has been solved for several thousands of years, and today the basics of it are thought in elementary school. One of rare astronomical occurrences that we will probably never see is the transit of Venus in front of the Sun, which occurred in 2012, and the next time it will happen will be in another 105 years, in December 2117.

10TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE

The Moon was last seen completely “covering” the Sun in November 2012. Replay lasting for over five minutes, the next solar eclipse that has totally for over seven minutes will be in 2150.

09BLUE MOON

The occurrence of two full moons in a calendar month happens roughly every 2.5 years. A visibly blue Moon can be caused by particles in the Atmosphere.

0867P/GHURYUMOV – GERASHIMENKO

This comet, orbits the Sun every 6.6 years, passing between Jupiter and Earth. In 2014 the spacecraft Rosetta will attempt to land on it and collect data.

07PLANETARY ALIGNMENT

In September 2040, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn will align. This happens around once every 57 years.

06TRANSIT OF VENUS

Lasting around six hours, this event sees Venus traverse the Sun. It last took place in June 2012 and wont happen again for another 105 years.

05LEONID METEOR SHOWER

“Meteor shower” is annual occurrence that produces 40 meteors an hour. Every 33 years hundreds can be seen every hour due to debris from the temple-tuttle comet´s orbit.

04HALLEY´S COMET

Famous as a recurring omen in history, its next return will be in 2061. A 75 year old orbit takes it out as far as Pluto and also in between Mercury and Vennus.

03HALE-BOPP COMET

Around 1-2 miles in diameter and last seen for a record 19 months in the sky, during 1996 and 1997. Has a highly elongated orbit around the Sun taking 2.392 years.

02COMET ISON

Comet Ison is Super comet up to 15 times brighter than the moon which will be visible from November 2013 to January 2014. Has orbital period of over 10 million years and may not be seen again.

01GREAT WHITE THUNDERSTORM

“Great white thunderstorm” is a 10.000 mile long storm on Saturn occurring at roughly 30 year intervals. Storms there are 10.000 times stronger than those on Earth.
