People are easy to trick- you come up with an idea, promise them a lot of money and they will bite the bait. The choice is big- for credit card fraud of checks to million frauds with large companies. Scammers don’t exist only in movies and some scams sound really unbelievable, but people can be persuaded into everything.
One of greatest and “most talented” scammers of all times was Czech Victor Lustig, and one of his most famous scams was the selling of Eiffel tower. He came up with the idea after an article in newspapers about huge maintenance expense of the Eiffel tower. He called sic biggest iron traders and presented himself as a minister in the government. He explained that the maintenance expenses are too big and that the sale it a state secret. He gave the traders one day to present to him their offers. The victim was Andrea Poison, he paid the advance for the Eiffel tower, and when he found out that he was cheated, he was so ashamed, that he didn’t report the scam to the police. From recent past we should mention the American Bernard Madoff, who lightened his clients for total of 65 billion dollars and was sentenced to 150 years in prison.

Madoff ran a massive securities fraud, costing his investors 50 billion dollars. He is currently serving a 150-years prison sentence.
07VICTOR LUSTIG (1890 - 1947)
He gained infamy for fraudulently selling the Eiffel tower twice. Also used a hoax money – printing machine to con victims.
06SOAPY SMITH (1860 - 1898)
He used a soap selling scam to dupe customers out of their money. Smith regularly paid off politicians and police to avoid criminal proceedings.
05THE FOX SISTERS (1814 - 1893)
Sisters helped to start Spiritualism by claiming to communicate with the dead. After 40 years, they admitted it was a hoax using a system of raps and knocks.
04GEORGE C. PARKER (1870 - 1936)
George repeatedly sold Brooklyn Bridge to gullible tourists along with the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Statue of Liberty.

He created a Central American country called Poyais. He drew in investors and even colonists to his fake country.
02FRANK ABANGALE (1948 - )
Made a fortune cashing bad checks and impersonating a pilot doctor and lawyer. He joined a FBI to work as an expert on fraud.
01CHARLES PONZI (1882 - 1949)
His “Ponzi Scheme” payed out returns using other investors’ money. Ponzi reportedly made 250.000 a day but cost investors millions.
