10 FASCINATING INFORMATION ABOUT NINTENDO

Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) is a gaming console which was produced by Nintendo in 1985. In the bigger part of Asia including Japan NES was sold under the name Family Computer. In South Korea license was entrusted to Hyundai Electronics, who sold NES as Comboy.

This was the best-selling gaming console of all time in Asia and North America. Nintendo claimed that it sold over 60 million consoles all over the world. The introduction of this console helped in the recovery of American gaming industry, after its call in 1983. NES set the standards for the following consoles in everything, starting with the design of games and the look of the controller. So, for example, game Super Mario introduced elements which will be copied in many similar games, and the likeability of D-pad controller which was used on NES, and for which they received Technology & Engineering Emmy Award, will be used all subsequent better known consoles. Nintendo were collaborating with Sony for a CD-ROM games console in 1989. Nintendo backed out, leading to the creation of the Play-station.

The company name is made of three kanji characters: NIN, TEN and DO. It means either “Leave luck to heaven”, or “Work hard, but in the end it is in heaven´s hands”.

Nintendo began in 1889, under Fusajiro Yamauchi. They sold playing cards called Hanafuda – the name translates as “flower cards” and they were used for gambling.

Mario was originally called Mr. Video and subsequently Jump-man. Portrayed as a carpenter, he was eventually named Mario after Nintendo´s irate landlord.

In the 1960´s Nintendo opened a chain of “Love Hotels”. These often windowless room were a discreet way for couples to enjoy each other´s company.

The Japanese version of Super Mario Bros Two wasn´t sold in the West as it was considered too hard. An easier game, “Dream Factory: Heart Pounding Panic”, was hurriedly re-skinned and sold as a Mario sequel.

Nintendo owns the Seattle Mariners Baseball team. They were bought for 76 million dollar in 1989.
