Reddit is a social entertaining website where registered users post content in form of links and text posts. Other users then vote on those posts with “up” and “down” based on which their position is marked on pages, including cover page. Reddit has headquarters in San Francisco. Reddit was founded by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian. In October 2006 it was bought by company Conde Nast Publications. In September 2011 Reddit was separated from Conde Nasta and today does business as a brach of Nast’s mother company Advance Publications.
The site is split into numerous categories, known as “subreddits”. As of 2013, the default subreddits are a combination of educational subreddits (news, science, technology, worldnews), entertainment subreddits (gaming, movies, music, television, videos), discussion subreddits (askreddit, askscience, books, explainlikeimfive, iama, todayilearned) and humour and image sharing subreddits (adviceanimals, aww, earthporn, funny, gifs, pics, wtf) along with the meta subreddit “bestof”. In total 23 subreddits are visible on the front page to new users and those who browse while not logged in with an account.
