10ILHA DE QUEIMADA GRANDE – SNAKE ISLAND
The island is quarantined with an estimated five Golden Lance-head snakes per square meter. Lance-heads have flesh melting poison and make up 90 percent of Brazil´s snakebite fatalities.
09BISHOP ROCK – SMALLEST ISLAND WITH A BUILDING
On the island is a lighthouse off the English coast in operation since 1858. Rising 45 meters from the sea bed, the 5.700 metric ton structure shines for 24 nautical miles.
08HASHIMA – GHOST / FORBIDDEN CITY
Seen in Sky-fall, this old mining facility was one of the most densely populated places in the world. Its workers abandoned it in 1974 when coal lost demand.
07ASCENSION ISLE – TERRAFORMED ISLAND
200 years ago it was a barren volcanic isle. Charles Darwin and Joseph Hooker selected plants for the island, terraforming it into a lush, fully functioning ecosystem.
06SURTSEY – EMERGING ISLAND
The island rose from sea in 1963-67 near Iceland. Continued volcanic eruptions, coupled with the sea cooling the lava, built up this 2.7 km2 wonder.
05BOUVET – MOST REMOTE ISLAND
The island is 93 percent glacier, making it near impossible to land on. Closest is 1.700km away (Antarctica). A mysterious lifeboat was found on the island in 1960, but no survivors.
04HART ISLAND – DEAD ISLAND
The island is 0.53 km2 mass pauper´s grave. Operated by inmates, it holds over 850.000 people. 2000 more are buried each year, stacked up in rows in trenches.
03GOGONA – COLOMBIA´S ALCATRAZ
Colombia´s Alcatraz is an abandoned prison, retaken by nature. Named for the number of snakes , in 1527, 170 Spanish soldiers came to the island: 87 died of snake bites.
02UROS ISLANDS – FLOATING ISLANDS
Found in Lake Titicaca (Peru and built 500 years ago, these floating villages are made from totora reeds. 80 percent of the population work in tourism, with 200.000 visitors a year.
